The 5% Rule: Why Smaller Profit Targets Make Better Funded Traders
Lower targets reduce overtrading and risk-seeking behavior. Here's the data behind why a 5% Phase 2 target produces more consistent, long-term funded traders than aggressive alternatives.
The 5% Rule
When we designed the Fund Flow evaluation, we made a deliberate choice: a 5% profit target for Phase 2. Many traders ask why we didn't set it higher. The answer comes down to one word — sustainability.
The Problem with High Targets
Aggressive profit targets create a dangerous incentive structure. When traders need 10% or more to pass, they're pushed toward:
- Overleveraging — taking positions far larger than their risk model justifies
- Overtrading — forcing setups that don't meet their criteria
- Revenge trading — chasing losses after inevitable drawdowns
The result? Traders who pass aggressive evaluations tend to blow their funded accounts within the first 30 days.
Why 5% Works
A 5% target rewards consistency over heroics. It allows traders to:
- Risk 0.5–1% per trade comfortably
- Wait for A+ setups without time pressure
- Build habits that translate directly to funded trading
The traders who pass our evaluation with a 5% target behave fundamentally differently than those chasing 10%. They're not gambling — they're managing risk.
The Data
After analyzing thousands of evaluations, we found that traders who pass with smaller targets have a 3x higher survival rate in their first 90 days as funded traders.
Takeaway
Don't fight the target. Design a system that achieves 5% through 20–30 small, well-managed trades rather than 2–3 home runs. Your funded account will thank you.
