Position Sizing for Prop Evaluations: A Complete Framework
Master the math behind position sizing. Learn how to calculate lot sizes, manage risk per trade, and survive drawdowns during your evaluation.
Position Sizing for Prop Evaluations
Position sizing is the single most important skill for passing a prop evaluation. Yet most traders treat it as an afterthought. This guide gives you a complete framework.
The Golden Rule
Never risk more than 1% of your account on a single trade.
On a $50,000 evaluation account, that's $500 per trade. This isn't conservative — it's mathematical survival.
Calculating Position Size
Here's the formula:
Lot Size = Risk Amount / (Stop Loss in Pips × Pip Value)
Example
- Account: $50,000
- Risk: 1% = $500
- Stop Loss: 20 pips
- Pip Value (EUR/USD): $10 per standard lot
Lot Size = $500 / (20 × $10) = 2.5 standard lots
The Drawdown Math
With a 5% daily drawdown limit, you can afford 5 consecutive losing trades at 1% risk each before hitting your daily limit. That's a realistic buffer.
At 2% risk per trade, you're one bad day away from blowing the account.
Risk Per Trade Tiers
| Tier | Risk % | Best For | |------|--------|----------| | Conservative | 0.5% | New evaluators | | Standard | 1% | Most traders | | Aggressive | 1.5% | Experienced only |
Summary
- Calculate lot size before entering the trade
- Never exceed 1% risk per position
- Reduce size after consecutive losses
- Your stop loss is non-negotiable
