Surviving Drawdowns: Mental Models from Funded Traders
Drawdowns are inevitable. What separates funded traders from the rest is how they respond. Learn the mental frameworks that keep professionals grounded.
Surviving Drawdowns
Every trader experiences drawdowns. The question isn't if โ it's how you respond.
The Two Types of Drawdown
1. System Drawdown
This is normal. Your strategy has a historical drawdown range, and you're experiencing it. Trust your system.
2. Tilt Drawdown
You're trading emotionally, deviating from your plan. Stop immediately.
The 3-Loss Rule
Most funded traders follow a simple rule:
After 3 consecutive losses, step away from the screen for the rest of the day.
This isn't weakness โ it's risk management. A bad day shouldn't become a catastrophic week.
Reframing Losses
Amateur traders see losses as personal failures. Professionals see them as business expenses.
- A restaurant pays for ingredients
- A trader pays for losses
- Both are costs of doing business
The Checklist
When in a drawdown, ask yourself:
- Am I following my trading plan?
- Are my position sizes correct?
- Am I trading to recover or trading to profit?
If you answered "no" to 1 or 2, or "recover" to 3 โ stop trading.
Recovery Protocol
- Reduce position size by 50% after a 3% drawdown
- Take a mandatory 24-hour break after hitting your daily loss limit
- Review your last 10 trades before placing the next one
- Return only when calm and prepared
Remember: the evaluation doesn't have a time limit. There's no rush.
