Reading the Economic Calendar
The economic calendar is your roadmap to volatility. But most traders read it wrong — they react to everything instead of preparing for what matters.
The Tier System
Not all economic events are created equal. Categorize them:
Tier 1 (High Impact)
- NFP (Non-Farm Payrolls)
- CPI (Consumer Price Index)
- FOMC rate decisions and press conferences
- GDP releases
These can move markets 100+ pips. Never hold through these without a plan.
Tier 2 (Medium Impact)
- Retail sales
- PMI data
- Jobless claims
These cause 30–50 pip moves. Manage existing positions accordingly.
Tier 3 (Low Impact)
- Most other releases
- Minimal market impact
The Institutional Approach
Institutions don't trade the news — they trade the reaction to the news.
- Before the event: Reduce exposure or flatten entirely
- During the event: Watch, don't trade
- After the event: Look for the market's true direction
Common Mistakes
- Trading the headline number — the revision matters just as much
- Ignoring context — a strong NFP in a risk-off environment may not help the dollar
- Holding through FOMC — even when you're "sure" of the outcome
Practical Rules for Evaluations
- Check the calendar before your trading session starts
- No new positions 30 minutes before Tier 1 events
- Never hold through FOMC press conferences
- Wait 15 minutes after major data for the dust to settle
The best trade during high-impact news is often no trade at all.
Summary
The calendar tells you when to be careful. Your strategy tells you what to do. Don't confuse the two.
